Core Ideas
Réti Opening is the most flexible hypermodern opening: 1.Nf3 delays center commitment as long as possible, letting Black move first. Named after Richard Réti (1920s, hypermodern school pioneer). Réti often transposes to English, King's Indian Attack, or Queen's Gambit depending on Black. Used by Kramnik and Anand in the 2000s era.
Plan for White
Fianchetto bishop on g2 first, then delay decision on e2-e4 push. Wait for Black setup, then punish weaknesses. If position is symmetric, seek minute deviations that make engine evaluation slightly White.
Plan for Black
Solid development like versus 1.d4 without specific target. Castle fast plus wait for White to commit. If White fianchettoes slowly, Black can dictate with immediate e5 or d5-c5 counter.
Grandmaster Tier Context
T4 National through T5 Master. Réti requires deep positional understanding because small judgments after opening determine outcome. Grandmaster coaches do not recommend for T3 minus; better for 2000 plus players with patience.
