Core Ideas
English Opening (1.c4) is an ambitious flank opening: control d5 from the side, delay central push until White understands Black's structure. Often transposes to other openings (Queen's Gambit, King's Indian Attack) depending on Black's response. Used by Kasparov, Kramnik, Carlsen as a flexible first move.
Plan for White
Fianchetto bishop on g2 for long-diagonal control. Delay d4 until position is clear. Kingside expansion with h3-g4 if Black castles queenside; queenside expansion with b4 if Black castles kingside.
Plan for Black
Mirror White with c5 (Symmetric English) or e5 (Reversed Sicilian). If symmetric: seek small deviations at moves 8-15. If reversed Sicilian: play like White Sicilian with extra tempo.
