Core Ideas
London System is a solid, easy-to-learn White setup: d4 pawn, f4 bishop, f3 plus d2 knights, e3 pawn. Can be played against almost any Black setup. Reputation as an "opening system" (not theory-heavy opening) makes it popular in amateur rapid and blitz. Carlsen and Nakamura occasionally use it in rapid.
Plan for White
Set up all pieces in natural positions (bishop f4, knight d2, bishop d3, queen e2 or c1). After castling, expand queenside with c3-b4 or kingside with h3-g4. London wants "boring" positional grind.
Plan for Black
Break London with fast c5 push. Activate the light-square bishop via b6-Bb7, or via Bd7 after c5 and Nc6. Long-term: enter middlegame with Black equalized, target trading off London's active dark-square bishop via Bd6 or Bh6 setups depending on the line.
Grandmaster Tier Context
T1 Beginner through T3 Competitive Local. London System is a strong Grandmaster coach recommendation for new players wanting simple opening without deep Ruy Lopez or Queen's Gambit theory study. T4 plus players often switch to more ambitious openings.
