Chess esport is competitive chess adopting modern esport structure: online arenas (online chess platforms, lichess), prize pools, streaming, and tiered tournaments from online play to over-the-board. Grandmaster Competitive Chess trains you for both formats: online arena climb and physical tournaments such as regional and national events.
How long to climb online rating from 1400 to 1800?
Typically 3 to 6 months with consistent coaching (1 to 2 sessions per week) plus 3 to 4 hours of independent practice per week. It depends on your starting point, commitment, and consistency. We do not promise fixed numbers because every player is different, but the path is structured and progress is tracked monthly.
Can I choose my own coach?
When you register, you see available coach profiles (tournament track record, opening specialty, coaching style). We match by target level, playing style, schedule, and instructor availability. If it does not click after the first session, you can switch coaches at no cost.
What platforms do coaching sessions use?
Game analysis uses online chess platform with screen-share. Live sparring uses online chess platform custom games or lichess studies. Voice via Discord. Your coach can also build a lichess study specifically for you as a permanent learning record.
Is it a fit for over-the-board players who rarely play online?
Yes. Grandmaster coaches understand OTB (over-the-board) chess feels different from online blitz. For players focused on regional or national events, we run dedicated classical time control simulations and opening prep using the FIDE database.
What if I want a coach for a middle-school kid targeting school tournaments?
Absolutely. For kids age 12 to 15 who already play and want to compete seriously, Competitive Chess fits. The matched coach is one who regularly teaches teens plus has tournament experience. For kids just starting out, the Chess Course program is a better fit.
