Checkmate

Definition
Checkmate is the state where the king is in check with no escape: the king is trapped, no piece can block, and no attacker can be captured to remove the check. Checkmate ends the game with victory for the executing player.
Usage and Example
Checkmate notation uses "#" (example: Qh7#). Canonical mate patterns to recognize: back-rank mate, smothered mate, scholar's mate, and Anastasia's mate.
Grandmaster Tier Context
T1 Beginner. Checkmate-in-1 puzzles are mandatory drilling for all T1 students before advancing to tactical patterns. Checkmate-in-2 and checkmate-in-3 appear at T2 Club level.
