Stalemate
Definition
Stalemate is the state where a player must move but has no legal moves available, while their king is NOT in check. The result is a draw (1/2 - 1/2) for both players, even if one player has a big material advantage. Unlike checkmate where the king is in check with no escape, in stalemate the king is safe but all pieces are locked.
Usage and Example
Stalemate often happens in K plus Q vs K endgame if the stronger player is not careful. Example: opponent king on a8, queen on c7, only black king can move but no safe square exists.
Grandmaster Tier Context
T2 Club. Crucial concept when players start converting material-advantage endgames. Many T1 players lose half a point due to insufficient stalemate awareness.
