Main Line

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.e5 Qe7 7.Qe2 Nd5 (Scotch Main Line, Mieses Variation; Black gets doubled c-pawns after bxc6)

Core Ideas

Scotch opens the position faster than Italian or Ruy Lopez with immediate d4 push. This gives Black tactical challenges earlier. Great opening for players who like open positions with dominant piece activity, less dependent on deep opening theory. Kasparov revived it in the 1990s.

Plan for White

Open the center by trading the d4 pawn for the e5 pawn, then use the tempo for piece activity. In the main line, hold the e5 pawn plus pressure the c6 pawn and the e-file, or trade queens and play the slightly more comfortable endgame thanks to Black doubled pawns.

Plan for Black

Trade knight on d4 to stabilize center, then solid development. Black must be ready to defend in endgame because Scotch often leads to a middlegame where Black carries doubled c-pawns.

Grandmaster Tier Context

T2 Club through T4 National. Scotch fits intermediate players who want to escape Ruy Lopez theory but still get open positions. Grandmaster coaches sometimes recommend switching from Italian to Scotch at T3 as a repertoire variation.
