Grünfeld Defense is a hypermodern hybrid with active pawn structure: Black challenges White's center immediately with d5, then g7 bishop attacks the long diagonal. Used by Kasparov, Svidler, Grischuk. Rated as top defense against 1.d4 in modern era, especially in Grünfeld Exchange leading to complex tactical middlegame.
Plan for White
Build a huge center with e4-d4-c3 setup. Consolidate via Nf3-Bc4-O-O system. If attack does not lead to advantage, endgame is still slightly better due to space plus queenside pawn majority.
Plan for Black
Bishop g7 pressures center from diagonal. Break center with c5 push at moves 8-12. Develop knight to c6 then maybe a6-e5 counter. Long-term: dynamically equal or slight edge in endgame if White overextends.

T4 National through T5 Master. Grünfeld is the theoretically hardest opening due to Grünfeld Exchange depth. Grandmaster coaches introduce at rating 1900 plus after players understand dynamic play.
