Isolated Pawn
Also known as:IQP
Definition
An isolated pawn is a pawn with no friendly pawns on adjacent files, so it cannot be supported or defended by other pawns. The Isolated Queen Pawn (IQP) on d4 or d5 is the most debated structure in chess theory: dynamically strong in middlegame, statically weak in endgame.
Usage and Example
Side with IQP: attack opponent king with piece activity (knight to e5 outpost, queen to h5, rook to d1). Side facing IQP: trade pieces plus blockade on d5 or d4 to reach a winning endgame.
Grandmaster Tier Context
T3 Competitive Local through T5 Master. IQP is the "acid test" for players 1500-2000. Grandmaster instructors unpack the IQP structure in a minimum of 3 dedicated sessions.
